BIOGRAPHY

Mário Macilau born 1984, Maputo, Mozambique; lives and works in Maputo. Mário Macilau is a Mozambican photographer whose work is deeply rooted in his personal history, social environment, and lived experience of inequality and resilience. Born in Maputo in 1984, during one of the most critical phases of the Mozambican Civil War, he grew up in a context marked by economic hardship and social instability. His family, facing severe financial difficulties, moved from the province of Inhambane to Maputo in search of a better life in post-independence Mozambique. From a very young age, Macilau was confronted with the realities of survival: at the age of ten, he began working in informal jobs, including carrying groceries in local markets frequented by the middle and upper classes, as well as washing cars in public parks in order to support his family. Macilau’s introduction to photography began in 2003, marking the start of a process of self-discovery through visual storytelling. His professional path took a decisive turn in 2007, when he exchanged his mother’s mobile phone for his first camera, a symbolic gesture that marked his full commitment to photography as a career and a vocation.

In the same year, he attended a course at the Centro de Formação e Documentação Fotográfica in Maputo, where he refined his technical skills and developed a stronger conceptual approach to image-making. Macilau’s photographic practice is characterized by a strong focus on social documentary, human dignity, and the visibility of marginalized communities. His work often explores themes such as labor, poverty, spirituality, environmental degradation, and social inequality, portraying individuals and communities with a sense of intimacy, respect, and visual intensity. Over the years, his work has gained international recognition, being presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Mozambique and abroad. Among his most significant achievements, in 2015 he was one of three artists featured at the Pavilion of the Holy See at the 56th Venice Biennale, where he presented a major body of work. In 2016, his work was also shown at Volta NY, further strengthening his international presence. That same year, Macilau’s work was included in the influential exhibition “Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design”, curated by Amelie Klein with Okwui Enwezor as consulting curator. The exhibition, organized by the Vitra Design Museum, toured internationally and was presented at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2015. Other major exhibitions include “Pangea: New Art from Africa and Latin America” at the Saatchi Gallery in London (2014), Fotofest Biennial in Houston (2014), the International Biennial of Casablanca (2014), Tempo Galeria Belo-Galsterer in Lisbon (2013), Dak’Art OFF in Dakar (2012), Rencontres de Bamako (2011), Chobi Mela Photo Festival in Dhaka (2011), Photo Spring in Beijing (2011), and Lagos Photo (2010–2011).

Macilau has also received numerous international awards and distinctions. In 2016, he was invited to participate in a program and exhibition organized by the United Nations Office at Geneva, in collaboration with World Press Photo and the Universal Rights Group. In the same year, he was selected by Foreign Policy as one of the “100 Leading Global Thinkers”, an honor awarded in Washington D.C. In 2015, he was invited to speak at Harvard University in Boston as a panelist during the Boston Global Forum. His work has received several prestigious awards, including the European Union Award for Environment (2015), the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary for Visual Arts (2014), and he is also a laureate of the Africa Center’s Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Fountainhead Residency Award (2014). Through his practice, Mário Macilau continues to develop a powerful visual language that bridges documentary photography and contemporary art, focusing on the human condition and the visibility of marginalized realities within global society.
