Agnes Waruguru (b. 1994, Nairobi, Kenya) is a contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, needlework, and installation. Her work focuses on the materiality of objects in space, explored through questions of personal identity and politics, often referencing women’s practices and traditional cultural symbols. Although her works often appear abstract, they are deeply rooted in a blend of memory, place, and lived experience.
Waruguru builds new visual “landscapes” from her personal experiences, which can be understood as emotional or memory-based spaces. Her works have a poetic quality, inviting viewers to slow down, reflect, and imagine. She earned a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design (USA). Her work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, the Americas, France, South Africa, Brazil, and Kenya. In 2020, she participated in the inaugural Stellenbosch Triennale 2020 in South Africa. In 2022, she was nominated for the Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs 2022 at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, and she was later invited to participate in the 60th Venice Biennale 2024.
She has also taken part in artist residencies in Kenya, Australia, and the Netherlands, most recently completing a residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. She currently lives and works in Nairobi, where she continues to develop a practice centered on memory, identity, and material experimentation.
