LA VERTIGINE
DELLE LUCCIOLE

Si apre sabato 28 gennaio dalle ore 12:00 alle ore 20 presso LIS10 Gallery di Arezzo (Via Cavour 5) la mostra dell’artista Nu Barreto, (1966 São Domingos, Guinea Bissau) dal titolo “La Vertigine delle Lucciole” curata da Alessandro Romanini.

L’artista reduce da un ciclo di mostre prestigiose in spazi museali come la Fondation Boghossian di Bruxelles e la Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation di Lisbona, per la sua prima mostra italiana ha prodotto appositamente un articolato complesso di opere, che rappresentano la summa della sua ricerca espressiva.

Il titolo fa riferimento sia alla vertigine che connota tutti gli elementi inclusi nelle sue opere, conferendogli un senso di precarietà e di moto continuo, che al titolo di uno scritto di Pier Paolo Pasolini (di cui ricorre il centenario della nascita), che tratta tematiche omologhe a quelle della ricerca di Barreto.

“La scomparsa delle lucciole”, è il titolo dell’articolo che Pasolini pubblicò il 1° febbraio del 1975 in che alludeva – come i dipinti di Barreto – Galla perdita drammatica di valori, il depauperamento dell’ambiente e del connesso sistema antropologico a beneficio di un processo improntato alla produzione e al consumo, che genera disparità diffuse e migrazioni globali. Le tecniche impiegate da Barreto spaziano dal disegno alla pittura, dal collage alla tecnica mista fino all’assemblaggio plastico, come dimostrano le opere esposte.

Partendo sempre dalle sue origini e dal legame con il continente africano e le disparità che lo caratterizzano, Barreto, con un impegno costante e militante, sottolinea nei suoi dipinti, in chiave metaforica l’impossibilità di miglioramento e di elevazione così come la precarietà che regna sovrana nei suoi dipinti, costellati di figure e oggetti che hanno perso il loro equilibrio e la loro funzione originaria per fluttuare in un’erranza senza sosta alla ricerca di una stabilità seppur temporanea, in uno spazio privo di riferimenti reali, temporalmente sospeso.

Cartoni (anche macerati), collage polimaterici, oggetti di riciclo, i materiali impiegati sono residuati del processo industriale e commerciale, che servono all’artista per marcare il legame con la vita quotidiana e con la dimensione produttiva e del consumo che è responsabile dei disequilibri odierni.

Così come la serie delle “Tongs”, (infradito), abbandonate sulle spiagge turistiche esotiche, che diventano opere plastiche grazie a un processo di elaborazione che richiama il ready made modificato dadaista riletto in chiave upcycling. Il ciclo di dipinti delle “bandiere” noto a livello internazionale, diventa critica che illustra la natura convenzionale della segnaletica della politica, le distorsioni del potere che si estende allo spazio, espresso tramite confini e frontiere, che possono essere attraversati tranquillamente dalle merci ma non dagli esseri umani.

Come afferma lo stesso artista “Cerco da sempre una scrittura pittorica aperta e sensibile, che evochi la situazione di instabilità e disparità con cui ci confrontiamo quotidianamente e che rappresenti un individuo imperfetto e incoerente come l’essere umano. Una scrittura che parli delle mie origini e delle possibilità future”.

THE VERTIGO OF FIREFLIES.

“The Vertigo of Fireflies”, exhibition of the artist Nu Barreto, (1966 São Domingos, Guinea Bissau), curated by Alessandro Romanini, will open Saturday, January 28 from 12:00 to 20 at Lis10 Gallery in Arezzo (Via Cavour 5).

The artist will be present at the vernissage, back from a series of prestigious exhibitions in museums such as the Fondation Boghossian in Brussels and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. For his first Italian exhibition he produced a complex of works, representing the synthesis of his expressive research.

The title has a double reference. the vertigo as sense of precariousness and continuous motion emanating from the artist’s works and the fireflies from the title of a text by Pier Paolo Pasolini (on the centenary of his birth), which deals with themes similar to those of Barreto’s research.

“The Disappearance of Fireflies”, is the title of the article that Pasolini published on 1 February 1975 in which he alluded – like Barreto’s paintings – to the dramatic loss of values, the depletion of the environment and the degeneration of the anthropological system to the benefit of a process of production and consumption, which generates widespread disparities and global migration.
The techniques employed by Barreto range from drawing to painting, from collage to mixed media to plastic assembly, as shown by the works on display.

Barreto always starts from his origins and from the disparities within the African continent and with a constant militant commitment he underlines in his paintings, metaphorically, the impossibility of improvement and elevation as well as a pervasive sense of precariousness. His works are studded with figures and objects that have lost their balance and their original function to float in an endless wandering in search of a stability albeit temporary, in a space without real references, temporally suspended.

Cartons (also macerated), polymateric collages, recycled objects, the materials used by the artist are residues of the industrial and commercial process, that serve to mark the link with everyday life and with the productive and consumer dimension that is responsible for today’s imbalances.

Similarly, the series of “Tongs”, (flip-flops), abandoned on exotic tourist beaches, become plastic works thanks to a creative process that recalls the dadaist modified ready-made, reinterpreted in an upcycling key. The cycle of paintings of the “flags”, internationally known, becomes a critical statement that illustrates the conventional nature of political signage, the distortions of power that extends to space, expressed through borders and frontiers, which can be safely crossed by goods but not by human beings.

As the artist himself states “I have always been looking for an open and sensitive pictorial expression, which evokes the situation of instability and inequality that we face daily and that represents an imperfect and inconsistent individual like the human being. A pictorial expression that speaks of my origins and future possibilities”.
